What is pilates?
Pilates is a hollistic mind - body - spirit training that has proved itself over the years.
Joseph Pilates called his method 'Contrology' and described it as follows:
'A complete co-ordination of body, mind and spirit.' Thanks to 'Contrology' you first achieve complete control of your own body. Next through appropiately repeating the exercises you will gradually and progressively achieve a natural rhythm and co-ordination in all the activities you unintentionally perform/carry out.
This way Pilates is a 100 year old method of functional training based on integrated muscle motions/movements. The exercises are not the point in itself but what is important is what they do to your body when it's not training, in other words out of the lessons. Basically the Pilates method consists of a series of MAT-exercises that are developed to achieve a complete control and balance of the whole body while you are experiencing the influence of gravity or of your own body weight. Thanks to training and repeating the exercises regularly you will create correct moving patterns which you will be applying deliberately and unintentionally in your daily life. Joseph Pilates was fully aware of the fact that everyone more or less suffers from imbalances in the body. He realised that not everyone is able to perform and undergo the MAT-exercises correctly, as a result of which they cannot enjoy the advantages that this method can effect/produce. Josep Pilates was a genius. He designed different/various appliances to help people in practising and experiencing these motion/movement patterns in various safe and effective situations. Practising on Pilates appliances is part of the method because it helps to bring the body in balance and shape by which a correct body posture becomes something natural. This way a strong physical and mental basis is formed which you can apply in all aspects of daily life.
