Pilates is a holistic mind - body - spirit training developed by Joseph Pilates at the beginning of the 20th century under the name 'Contrology'.
Contrary to a lot of other training methods in which separate exercises are taught, in practising Pilates you are instructed functional patterns. The exercises are developed in such a way that the body is training in the same way it moves in its daily activities. While doing Pilates exercises body, mind and spirit work together to create a physical and mental balance. Six original Pilates principles are hereby followed and five parts of the mind are employed.

Correct body posture is the key word. Since our childhood we have been told 'Sit up straight!' 'Stand upright!' but few of us have wondered why it was so important and we found it hard to sit or stand up the way they wanted us to. Even as an adult it is difficult to sit or stand correctly. Joseph Pilates was born in Germany at the end of the 19th century. He developed a training method for himself. While he was a prisoner of war in England during the First World War he successfully applied his Pilates Method on his fellow prisoners for the first time. Nowadays people all over the world are trained by the Pilates method.
